Happiness (1998)
*MILD SPOILERS AHEAD*
I don’t think I would’ve watched this movie had I known what it was about. It’s got all the themes and makings for a post-zoovie nightmare: heartbreak, rape, suicide, mass murder, and pedophilia.
It also has all the makings of an absolute smash: a star studded cast (Philip Seymour Hoffman and Dylan Baker Hall among it), countless quotables, and scenes that will have you squirming in your seat with discomfort. It also has what I would call the most fucked up scene I have ever seen in a movie. I don’t know what the perfect ratio of fucked up shit to comedic moments is, but there is a pretty hefty dose of both.
I had so many feelings after watching this movie. I felt guilty for finding the humor even though intended. I felt sick thinking about how the characters were living through common occurrences in real life. I was also kind of relieved when it ended. It’s like a blend of the most brutal honesty imaginable and the chuckle of the fuckin Joker himself.
If you are a human being with a pulse, I guarantee you will go through the whole spectrum of emotions if you decide to watch.
